On Thursday 29 October, East Midlands Business Link magazine held its highly anticipated 2020 East Midlands Bricks Awards ceremony. Taking place online for the first time since the annual event’s inception, property and construction professionals gathered at the virtual awards evening to recognise and celebrate those behind the changing landscape of our region, and reward the very best companies, teams, and individuals. The event began with opening remarks from Michael Fisher, East Midlands Business Link Editor, and host of the evening, who then introduced keynote speaker Ken Nettleship, Business Expansion Specialist at Invest in Nottingham. Ken spoke of the resilience of the East Midlands construction sector, current challenges, highlighted some of the progress that has been made on the transformational projects taking place in Nottingham and the wider region, as well as noting companies making new commitments to take space in the region. The first award of the evening was ‘Deal of the Year’, sponsored by IoD East Midlands. Honourable mentions for the category included Fisher German, for the sale of land off Rempstone Road in East Leake, Salloway Property Consultants, for the Dunstall Park police station deal between Derbyshire Constabulary and Ivygrove Developments, and Christie & Co, for the Lakeside venue deal. The ‘Contractor of the Year’ award, sponsored by Frank Key Group, followed, for which Wynbrook Ltd, D L Rhodes & Son, and Bowmer + Kirkland were finalists. Ultimately, Wynbrook Ltd were named the winner. The third award of the night, sponsored by RSM, was ‘Commercial Development of the Year’. Runners up were Rayner Davies Architects, for Wilford Care Home, and J Tomlinson, for Airfield Business Park. The winner of the category was G F Tomlinson, for the University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute. Next up was the ‘Residential Development of the Year’ award, sponsored by Sterling Capital Reserve. Honourable mentions included Chevin Homes, for Hall Farm, Kirk Langley, and Wheeldon Brothers Ltd, for Outseats Farm, Alfreton. The award went to Geda Construction Ltd, for Low Street, Elston. The ‘Excellence in Design’ award, sponsored by Ibstock, followed. Rayner Davies Architects’ Wilford Care Home scooped the award, beating out stiff competition from Matthew Montague Architects’ Repton School Sports Centre and Benoy’s work on the University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute. The next award was the ‘Sustainable Development of the Year’ award, sponsored by Forterra plc. The runners up for this award included Countryside Properties, for Abington Place, and Leicestershire County Council, for the Snibston Colliery transformation. It was Lincolnshire Showground’s EXO Centre, however, that stole the award. The ‘Developer of the Year’ category followed, sponsored by Ward Recycling. While Henry Davidson Developments were an honourable mention, the award went to ALB Investments. Next was the ‘Most Active Agent’ award, sponsored by Blueprint Interiors. Salloway Property Consultants and Knight Frank were named runners up for the category, which was ultimately won by NG Chartered Surveyors. The ‘Architects of the Year’ award, sponsored by Ibstock, followed. Finalists for the category included Faulkner Browns and Allan Joyce Architects. The winner of the award, however, was Design Haus Architecture. The penultimate award of the evening was ‘Responsible Business’, sponsored by Press for Attention PR. Finalists for the category were Geda Construction and Leicestershire County Council, with the winner named as Student Housing. The final award of the evening, sponsored by Streets Chartered Accountants, was ‘Overall Winner’, which was scooped by Geda Construction Ltd. The event then concluded with congratulations, and time for networking.
