< Previous50 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk AUTOLINK As companies reconsider their fleet needs, East Midlands Business Link covers the question of whether to hire, lease or buy vehicles, as well as a key shift in the type of vehicles businesses are looking to acquire. The desire for flexibility when it comes to vehicles used by businesses has become key in the wake of coronavirus as firms try to adapt as necessary to fluctuating workloads and an expanding or shrinking workforce. Online shopping, greater home deliveries, the soaring calls for goods of all kinds, and the return of industries like construction to pre-COVID levels, for instance, are seeing rising appetite for commercial vehicles. As firms shift to higher or lower demand for their services or products, and see additional pressure on budgets, they are reassessing their needs when it comes to vans, trucks, cars et al., throwing up the question of whether they should be buying, leasing or hiring vehicles. Flexible rental and hiring solutions have proven to be important this year - whether required just for a day, week, or longer - presenting an off balance sheet option which does not need extra funding or large cash outlay and comes with no long term commitment. Insurance and servicing are also taken out of your control. This is an ideal option for companies looking to protect and free up cash, avoid idle fleets and long-term risk, but also for growing businesses wanting to source vehicles rapidly as they expand. However, it is usually more expensive than, say, leasing, because of the flexibility of contracts. Leasing vans, trucks, and cars comes with similar benefits to hiring, but offers a number of others, such as the avoidance of large upfront costs, fixed monthly rentals for the lease term (easing budget planning), flexible duration and mileage terms, the choice to include maintenance and servicing in the monthly fee, the inclusion of road tax during the agreement, no concerns over depreciation risks or disposal, the new van being under warranty, and the ability leasing opens up to take on a new vehicle frequently (with an average three- year contract) and keep up with new technologies. In addition limited fleets Fluctuating 50-52.qxp_Layout 1 07/10/2020 11:00 Page 1www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link 51 AUTOLINK companies, sole traders, or LLPs may be eligible for business leasing agreements which present positive tax implications. Many businesses are able to claim back part or all of the VAT. One should, though, make note of the chance of excess mileage charges, the need to return the vehicle in good condition, possible penalty clauses, and the fact that terminating the contract early can be expensive. Moreover, you will not own the vehicle, and it thus cannot be taken to cover debts if a business hits financial trouble. Nevertheless, many lease agreements now offer flexibility at the end of the lease so one can choose between handing the vehicle back, purchasing the vehicle outright, or refinancing. Buying, meanwhile, has the advantage of owning the vehicle, which comes with no restriction on where and how many miles you can drive. This option is best suited if you are seeking to use a vehicle long term. However, not everyone can afford this, maintenance and insurance are your responsibility, and as soon as the vehicle is driven, depreciation begins. Though often companies look at one route for forming their fleet, businesses are expanding their fleet funding options to include ownership, leasing, and rental, allowing maximum flexibility and the ability to scale up and down to fluctuating business levels. The influx of home working, the expectation that more employees will in the future be working from home regularly, and decrease in business miles driven, are seeing companies reconsider the types of vehicles they will need in the future. Simultaneously, major change is on the horizon, in the use of greener alternatives - emphasised as businesses in the country are told to focus on “green recovery.” The desire for electrification is increasing among fleets, with record electric vehicle (EV) demand levels reported by leasing companies. Furthermore an Arval Mobility Observatory report highlights that fifty- three per cent of UK businesses are already running battery electric vehicles (BEVs) or plan to in the next three years in comparison to forty-one per cent of those asked in 2019. New tax incentives for EVs, alongside the Government’s target to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 are set to accelerate the demand for zero-emission capable options. As of April this year for example pure EVs now incur no company car tax, growing to one 52 Á © Shutterstock /ysuel 50-52.qxp_Layout 1 07/10/2020 11:00 Page 252 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk AUTOLINK per cent in 2021/22 and two per cent in 2022/23. According to BVRLA, this could see some drivers achieve company car tax savings in excess of £15,000 over a three-year cycle, compared to operating an equivalent petrol or diesel car. The BVRLA also pinpoints how the government is focusing on promoting the greenest cars by limiting its plug-in car grant to vehicles with emissions below 50g/km that can cover at least seventy miles in electric-only mode. Meanwhile, initiatives and partnerships are being formed to speed up the switch to EVs, for instance in June the UK Electric Fleets Alliance launched (a partnership between The Climate Group and BT Group). The alliance is to convene a business leadership coalition to advocate for one- hundred per cent EV sales nationwide by 2030, in combination with targeted policy support to help businesses to make the switch. Improvements in battery technology and an increase in rapid charging points, addressing common range anxiety associated with EVs, are also impacting the EV switch as well as the chance EVs present to reduce total cost of ownership of fleets with reduced fuel, tax, services and MOT costs, Government incentives, subsidies, and the gradually reducing cost of EVs themselves, as well as the declining cost of installing charging units with the Government’s Workplace Charging Scheme. While the strides being made with electric cars and growth of new models is clearly shown in the media, the variety of cost-effective choices for electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) is more limited, seeing most LCVs still powered by diesel. Numerous LCVs are now getting an electric variant however, and 2020 has been a big year for the electric van market. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles recently opened order books for its first fully electric van, the eTransporter, in the UK which offers an all-electric range of up to eighty-two miles. In addition, prices and specifications have been revealed for the full electric, new PEUGEOT e-Expert van, available across three trim levels: Compact, Standard and Long wheelbases and as a crew or panel van. A 50kWh battery provides the vehicle with a maximum range of up to 148 miles, and the larger 75kWh battery extends the range up to 211 miles. Moreover, Vauxhall has released pricing and specification for the Vivaro-e, its first factory-built, fully electric van, for which the first deliveries are to begin in October. Two battery sizes are available: 50kW provides 144 miles of all-electric range and the larger 75kW battery offers 205 miles of range. These account for just three new options this year. Steps are also being taken forward to expand the medium and heavy duty EV commercial vehicle market. Volta Trucks for example has created Volta Zero, the world’s first purpose-built full electric 16- tonne commercial vehicle, which has a range of 195-125 miles, and across the pond, Volvo’s VNR Electric Heavy-Duty trucks are being piloted. © Shutterstock /Gorlov-KV 50-52.qxp_Layout 1 07/10/2020 11:00 Page 3FEATURES Manufacturing Spotlight Materials Handling Water & Waste Management Education & Training Business Services Movember Charity Special REGULARS Commercial Property Corporate Hospitality Motoring Watch out too for the latest news from across the region in every sector Next month in November 2020 - Deadline 14th October Visit us at www.e astmid landsb usiness link.co. uk where you’ll find the latest news as it breaks – and why not subscri be to our newsle tters so you can have. the latest news emaile d to your inbox 53.qxp_Layout 1 07/10/2020 11:01 Page 1OUT OF OFFICE Derbyshire IT firm supports colleague taking part in charity trek Employees at a Derbyshire IT firm have dug deep to help one of their colleagues smash his fundraising target for a cancer charity. Workers at Axess Systems sponsored senior account manager Simon Graver as he braved gale force winds whilst taking part in a 10-mile trek through the New Forest for the Wessex Cancer Trust. Simon, who has worked for Axess Systems for 12 years, has raised more than £1,000 for the charity which supports families through cancer. He was joined on the annual Walk For Hope trek by wife Chris and fellow members of the Highbridge Community Farm. “The Walk for Hope is an event which I take part in most years,” said Simon, whose daughter, Emma Graver, works for the Wessex Cancer Trust. “Obviously this year’s event was a little different because of the Coronavirus outbreak; we did the trek in small, socially-distanced groups. The day we chose to do the walk, Britain was being battered by Storm Frances but we battled our way through the New Forest and the sun shone as we approached the finish line. “It was great to do the trek with my friends from the Highbridge Community Farm and just nice to be out and about during this strange time. Ed Morton, Managing Director of Axess Systems, which is based on the Denby Hall Business Park in Denby, said: “We’re very pleased to support Simon and such a worthwhile charity.” Multi-award success for Midlands contractor Midlands contractor G F Tomlinson is celebrating being a successful finalist for both the East and West Midlands 2020 LABC Building Excellence Awards. Announced via a virtual ceremony, the LABC Regional Building Excellence Awards are the largest business to business awards in the UK, and recognise outstanding public sector construction projects in 12 regions across England and Wales. Successful projects that G F Tomlinson delivered were winners of the ‘Best Small Commercial Project’ in the East Midlands awards, and ‘Best Public Service or Educational Building’ in the West Midlands Awards. Chesterfield-based project Ashgate Hospicecare was named as the winner of ‘Best Small Commercial Project’ in the East Midlands awards – completed last year, the refurbishment of the hospice included the creation of nine new private bedrooms for end of life care patients. G F Tomlinson has been a longstanding supporter of Ashgate Hospicecare, and as its designated charity partner, the firm has been supporting the important work of the hospice since 2016. Another successful project in the East Midlands Awards was The University of Nottingham Biodiscovery Institute, and works involved the construction of a world-class educational facility for research into identifying breakthroughs in the treatment and diagnosis of serious diseases. The project was awarded highly commended for the ‘Best Public Service or Educational Building’ category in the awards. The Central Science Laboratories, Keele University project was the winner of the West Midlands ‘Best Public Service or Educational Building’ category, and works for this included the construction of a new 5,300 sq m, four-storey building which was completed in 2019, bringing state-of-the-art laboratories for geography, geology, forensic science and astrophysics courses to the Keele University Faculty of Natural Sciences. 54 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk Plans submitted for Midlands-wide ‘tap and cap’ payment platform Leaders from across the Midlands are calling on Government to fund a region- wide smart ticketing platform, which would revolutionise the way passengers use and pay for public transport. A ‘tap and cap’ system, similar to the platform used by Transport for London, would allow travellers to seamlessly pay for trips on the rail, bus and tram network via their smartphone, travel pass or bank card. A new payment model would ‘cap’ the payments at a daily or weekly limit, enhancing value for money for those travelling across the whole Midlands region, regardless of travel mode or transport operator. The smart platform could also be adapted to include emerging transport modes such as electric bike hire and the rental of e-scooters. While smart ticketing initiatives exist in some form in Nottingham, via the Robin Hood travel card and in parts of the West Midlands via ‘Swift’, the UK’s second biggest public transport payment system after London’s Oyster scheme, this new platform would be the first to function at a Midlands-wide level, and encompass all public transport operators. Post COVID-19, new payment models are seen as essential in supporting more flexible work and travel patterns, with season tickets likely to represent poor value for money for many commuters. This new contactless system would also make payments completely touch free. The development of the smart ticketing platform, which will be based on ‘Swift’ payment technologies, will be led by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) with initial rollout of the plans being implemented by TfWM and Nottingham City Council. Strategic regional transport body Midlands Connect will work with other local authorities across the region to integrate more areas into the scheme, which could be operational by 2022. The UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus in Loughborough is a partnership with global diagnostics company PerkinElmer. It will be the seventh major lab supplementing NHS labs, processing tests across the National Testing Programme, and the first facility in the East Midlands, following sites in Milton Keynes, Alderley Park, Cambridge, Glasgow in Scotland, Newport in Wales and Antrim in Northern Ireland. The Lighthouse Lab network has been established to increase the number of COVID-19 tests that can take place each day. The labs receive samples from care homes, COVID-19 testing centres and home testing kits, which are then processed by a skilled workforce from across the scientific community. The Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus aims to process 50,000 tests per day by the end of the year and will be delivered and managed by PerkinElmer. Charnwood Campus Commercial Director Gosia Khrais says: “We expressed our readiness to join the national effort to fight the pandemic very early on, and worked closely with the Department of Health and Social Care to build a robust business case for close collaboration between Charnwood Campus and PerkinElmer, with Charnwood providing the building and facility management services, and PerkinElmer recruiting a skilled workforce and performing the testing. The proposal has been supported by Charnwood Borough Council which helped promote the Campus site and Loughborough as the best location for the new lab. “The teams deployed to lead these projects are highly qualified experts focused on delivering the best outcomes. The Charnwood Lighthouse Lab will significantly accelerate current COVID-19 testing capacity, helping to control the spread of the virus and prevent spikes in the number of cases. “The successful delivery of the project will help protect lives, the NHS and the economy by allowing us to test and confirm or rule out COVID quickly and on a mass scale. People with a negative test result will be able to return to work without the need to self-isolate. Testing also allows us to quickly identify and isolate those with a positive test result, helping to contain the spread of the virus. “I am pleased that Charnwood Campus’ world-class facility will be part of the largest network of diagnostic testing facilities in British history, and that Loughborough will play a key role in scaling up the UK’s testing capacity and helping to fight against the virus.” OUT OF OFFICE www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link 55 Leicester gets £1.5m heritage action zone boost Historic buildings in two popular shopping streets in Leicester’s city centre are set to benefit from a major heritage improvement scheme. Leicester City Council has been awarded £1.5million from Historic England as part of the national High Street Heritage Action Zone programme. The funding will help support a four-year scheme that will see some of the most important historic shopfronts and buildings in Granby Street and Church Gate repaired, restored and spruced up. Property owners and businesses will be invited to apply for grants to support work to repair building frontages, reinstate lost architectural features and help bring empty upper-floor space back into use. The scheme will run alongside the city council’s planned £1.25million investment in public realm improvements. This includes the pedestrianisation of part of Church Gate as part of an ambitious £8million scheme to transform the shopping streets around the Clock Tower. The funding will also support research into the history of the two streets and key buildings, the development of heritage skills apprenticeships with local businesses, and free initial architectural advice for property owners. City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “These important and popular shopping streets are rich in architectural heritage and home to some truly remarkable buildings. “I am delighted that Historic England has now confirmed it generous funding. We can now begin work with property owners and businesses to help improve shopfronts, preserve the architectural history and celebrate the unique character of these streets.” Leicester packaging firm raises over £8,000 for Rainbows Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young people has been given the perfect package by a Leicester company. Staff at Keenpac, based on Meridian Business Park, chose Rainbows as its charity partner for 2019 and have now handed over £8,870 to the hospice that cares for over 450 children and young people with life-limited illnesses. Last year, colleagues, along with their families and friends, took part in the charity’s It’s a Knockout, Mudnificent7 and Derby Abseil events. A party was also held to celebrate the company’s 40th birthday. Rob Standen, General Manager at Keenpac, said: “It was an honour to raise such a great amount for Rainbows, a very special Leicestershire based charity, and we would like to send all our good wishes to them for the future.” Emily Wright, Corporate Fundraiser at Rainbows, added: “Everything that Keenpac has done has been wonderful and it sounds like the staff have had a great time in raising such valuable funds. And finally The world of Frazer Mistaken marketing Sometimes marketing campaigns don’t hit quite how you plan. Dettol recently learned this with its new ad expressing the joys of returning to the office. Unfortunately, it appears office staff do not agree. The ad reads: “Hearing an alarm. Putting on a tie. Carrying a handbag. Receptionists. Caffeine-filled air. Taking a lift. Seeing your second family. Watercooler conversations. Proper bants. The boss’s jokes. Plastic plants. Office gossip. Those weird carpets. Face-to-face meetings. Not having to make lunch. CCing. BCCing. Accidentally replying-all. Hearing buzzwords. Leaving early for a cheeky afternoon in the sun. Disinfect surfaces we use throughout the day, so we can do it all again tomorrow.” The ad has been called cringeworthy, out of touch, and faced rigorous mockery online. Think about it - when you consider the best things about office working, is it carrying a handbag or the thoroughly exciting act of CCing, which can also oddly enough be done remotely? Against intentions, the ad has reminded people why they would prefer to stay at home. One Twitter user parodied: “Choose working from home. Choose emailing in your pants. Choose being just as productive but gaining back your commute time. Choose coffee at £5 a bag not £5 a cup. Choose not having to hear ‘doing anything nice at the weekend’.” One thing is for certain, the critical nature of the English public should not be underestimated. 58 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk © SHUTTERS T OCK/ HALFPOINT We know that a good night’s sleep increases productivity, but have you ever wondered if your sleeping position affects working output? No? Well, that doesn’t matter as Frazer has been made privy to new research conducted to determine whether sleeping pose can impact your salary and work rate for the better. The study reveals that high-income and low- income earners favour different positions. According to the data, those who sleep in the freefall position (laid on your stomach with arms under a pillow or at either side of the head) are most likely to be successful at work, with 29% of those earning more than £54,900 annually preferring this position. The second most popular sleeping position among high earners is the soldier (laying on your back with arms directly at your sides), with 23% choosing this as their favourite way to sleep. So, are you a successful sleeper? While some have naturally embraced the change, news sent by an old associate to Frazer shows just how much others have been missing the natural rhythms of the office - turning to artificial office noise to get through the period! Audio engineers have detailed how they are receiving numerous peculiar requests to create background sounds that replicate the office: keyboard taps, telephone rings, fax machine hums, distant conversation. What could be, under normal circumstances, considered distracting or annoying has become a mainstay in playlists. Hyper specific noises have even come to the fore for your listening pleasure, with for example ‘Early Morning, Desk Neighbour Eating Breakfast’ on Spotify. 58.qxp_Layout 1 07/10/2020 11:04 Page 1www.letterboxsentry.com HOW IT WORKS Letterbox Sentry is installed on the rear of any standard letterbox and can be set to lock and unlock at predetermined times.
