< Previousturbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine. In any case, you’re getting a lot of horsepower for your money with the entry level at 296bhp and the two higher engine choices putting out 444bhp and 567bhp respectively. Jaguar claims it’s the most thrilling of its petrol engines and features innovative technologies for improved fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising on performance. It also boasts an Active Sports Exhaust system so that drivers have the option of releasing the rumble at all engine speeds. Available with configurable and adaptive dynamics, and in coupe or convertible, there’s a huge range of customisability with the new and improved F-Type. The model is available now and if bought before 1 April, drivers can beat the road tax increase of up to £425. Maserati Alfieri It’s fitting that the Maserati Alfieri is launching at the Geneva International Motor Show taking place in March as it was first previewed at the show as a concept car back in 2014. Of course, since then there’s been some major changes and design overhauls. Although details are understandably scare at present, what we do know for certain is that the car will have petrol and pure-electric powertrain options. Press images would also seem to confirm it will be a mid-engine supercar. Readers will have to wait on tenterhooks with the rest of us until the show to learn more about this much-anticipated model. Bentley Flying Spur There’s no denying the pure luxury and sophistication of the Bentley Flying Spur, which has typically been used for chauffeuring. The new 2020 model shares only its name with its predecessor and boasts exceptional style and features that begs to be driven itself. If the £165,000 price tag doesn’t put you off, then this could be the luxury vehicle you’ve been looking for. All the luxurious touches are there from the 22-inch wheels and the leather and wooden veneer interior, but that’s enough about its looks, how about its power? The high performance 6.0-litre W12 engine produces a whopping 626bhp and 664 pound-feet of torque, going 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds – 0.7 seconds faster than its predecessor – with a top speed of 207mph. Functionality will also be a big draw here with 360-degree camera and auto park. With the launch of this Continental GT sibling, Bentley is rolling out a challenger to the new Rolls-Royce Ghost launching later this year whilst also appealing to loyal customers and wooing new fans. Not an easy task, but with the maker claiming that the new Flying Spur represents a “quantum leap in technology, performance and innovation”, Rolls-Royce should be afraid. The model is expected sometime in the coming months. www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link 51 AUTOLINK 48-51.qxp_Layout 1 03/03/2020 10:40 Page 4The car features a superior standard spec over its older, but still very able GT410 Sport sibling. Long story short; the fresh Lotus provides anyone lucky enough to get behind the wheel with improved usability and a better level of driving comfort. The up-to-the-minute set of wheels from the sports car maker’s Norfolk headquarters is designed to be a usable ‘every day’ ride. It comes fitted with Sparco sport seats and air-conditioning to create a more relaxed environment for all occupants. What’s more, tech, such as a reversing camera increases safety during low-speed manoeuvres. Additionally, a high-class infotainment system with All-New Lotus Evora GT410 UNIQUELY BRILLIANT navigation and Apple CarPlay is now factory- fitted - and includes digital radio for the first time. Enhanced sound insulation for reduced road roar and better refinement further improves the drive. The car holds the road wonderfully – especially in corners, where the Lotus feels like it’s on rails. Much of this is to do with a revised damper rate. While it still delivers thrills, the ride is more compliant – so our British pothole peppered Lotus has launched a spanking new version of the Evora for 2020 – the sizzling GT410. 52 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk AUTOLINK 52-53.qxp_Layout 1 04/03/2020 10:14 Page 1roads aren’t necessarily an issue for this model! Furthermore, the use of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S all-weather tyres means 365 days a year usability, while a new rear tailgate features a large glass section for impressive rear visibility. Astonishingly, with a price of only £82,900, the new GT410 is £3,000 less than the GT410 Sport, so it delivers extraordinary value for money. Maybe Lotus is desperate? Or is that just us being cynical? Whatever the case, the Evora GT410 is a little bit lovely and is a perfect big boy’s toy. Expect 186mph out of this (where you can do it) – and don’t be surprised when your skull welds itself to the headrest – 0-60mph only takes 4.1 seconds. Whatever you do, though, please be careful – this is a car that should still be handled carefully. And, if you cherish your licence, we suggest you find a racetrack when you feel that “speed demon” naughtiness in you coming out to play! www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk East Midlands Business Link 53 AUTOLINK 52-53.qxp_Layout 1 04/03/2020 10:15 Page 2East Midlands Manufacturing and Engineering Conference Tuesday 17th March The Roundhouse, Derby This year’s conference will focus on sustainable manufacturing in the region – highlighting the strategies, efficiencies and support available to businesses which allow the creation of manufactured products in a way that reduces pollution, waste and energy use while remaining economically feasible. For Koobr, this support is a no- brainer and we encourage all businesses to get involved in some way. Industry award for Ibstock’s Group Sustainability Manager The Group Sustainability Manager at Leicester-based brick maker Ibstock has won a top sustainability award in recognition of his commitment to energy management. Michael McGowan was named ‘Energy Manager of the Year’ at the edie Sustainability Leaders Awards 2020. He has been a driving force behind Ibstock’s energy management strategy, playing a key role in the development and launch of its ‘Sustainability Roadmap 2025’. As a result of the energy saving measures he has introduced, Ibstock is on target to achieve a 15% reduction in CO2 per tonne of production by 2025, and on average it now takes almost 65% less energy to make brick than was the case in 1970. The awards, co-ordinated by environmental publisher edie.net, are the UK’s largest and most prestigious sustainability awards, recognising excellence across the spectrum of green business. According to the judges: “Michael stood out because of his vision for the need and, more importantly, his ability to communicate and engage with the issues and people concerned. “He initiated a broad scope of actions across the company on energy management, which the Judges believe make him an ideal winner for the category.” Mr McGowan said: “I’m incredibly humbled to be named Energy Manager of the Year. But this award is recognition of the hard work of the wider team in improving energy performance. “The progress we have made shows we can bring about real change to reduce our impact on the environment and our focus remains on making further improvements over the next five years.” East Midlands Business Link 57 OUT OF OFFICE 57.qxp_Layout 1 03/03/2020 10:46 Page 1Here’s Frazer’s monthly collection of the weird and wonderful ‘news’ that came his way over the last few weeks! And finally The world of Frazer A brush with the law… At the start of the month, Business Link towers erupted in laughter as news broke about an intruder in parliament. A fox managed to sneak by security and even leave a nice “gift” behind. Our bushy tailed friend was spotted ascending an escalator to the main building in which MPs’ offices are located, and it rather kindly left some droppings outside their doors. Police eventually caught the animal, not after being outfoxed though. The furry creature was eventually apprehended and returned to nature, presumably with strict instructions that it should write in with its complaints on hunting, not turn up to protest and clearly not leave excrement. It’s safe to say that the animal is now our office mascot. A well-known insurance company made a rather comic boo-boo recently, having to apologise to customers across the East Midlands after mistakenly calling thousands of people ‘Michael’. Apparently caused by a technical error, customers across the country were incorrectly addressed in emails, though the company assured recipients that all other information was in fact correct. Ironically, Frazer can reveal that this happened as news broke over the name Michael dropping in popularity. According to research, the name sat amongst the top ten in the 1980s but is now left behind by ‘Oliver’ and ‘Harry’…remember you read it here first folks. 58 East Midlands Business Link www.eastmidlandsbusinesslink.co.uk Call me Michael © SHUTTERSTOCK/ VIRTUA73 Humans vs robots: the battle continues At a recent Nottingham business luncheon, one of Frazer’s companions suggested that robots are getting even closer to taking over the world! Pointing to a new survey, it appears that 64% of employees have more trust in a robot than their workplace manager. Frazer of course, upon the end of this meeting, rushed to research the truth of this matter and indeed came upon the study of employees, managers and HR executives across 10 counties. In addition to the above, the survey found that 50% of people would choose to ask a robot for advice over their manager and 82% believe robots can do things better than their managers including offering unbiased information, maintaining work schedules, problem solving, and budget making. A bit of a blow for managers maybe, but at least the study shows that employees think human managers are still better than robots at understanding their feelings. Clearly they haven’t worked for Frazer’s bosses. © SHUTTERSTOCK/ OLENA YAKOBCHUK © SHUTTERSTOCK/ B.FORENIUS 58.qxp_Layout 1 03/03/2020 10:47 Page 1We run a series of workshops to help guide business owners and directors through their full business life-cycle.
