New plans for a hotel at the former Job Centre Plus building at Forester House in Derby, on the corner of Becket Street and Newland Street, have been approved.
Permission had already been granted for an apartment scheme at the site. The new application however, from Universal Real Estate Ltd, will change the use of the site to accommodate a 111-bedroom hotel, which would be operated by easyHotel, and a buffet style restaurant.
The plans involve the full renovation and conversion of the existing vacant 1970s building.
Nine full time and ten part time jobs are to be created.
A design statement submitted on behalf of the applicant by JSA Architects says: “It is considered that the redevelopment of this building into a hotel and restaurant would contribute positively to the vitality of the local area.
“The proposal highlighted in this document would have minimal impact on the existing architectural style, proposing minimal changes to modernise and breathe life back into this tired building, positively impacting the existing street- scene.
“The scale and size of the existing building will remain unchanged, however the introduction of the building use in this area is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy. It provides a sustainable use for this existing, vacant building in a prominent location in Derby City Centre.”
