Plans for the extension of IQ Exchange Nottingham, in the city’s creative quarter, have been recommended for approval despite controversy surrounding the development.
Currently the development provides student accommodation comprising 287 bedrooms and ancillary facilities, ground floor retail (fronting Gedling Street) and storage space (fronting Boston Street).
The new plans would see an extra 85 bedrooms added along with an additional 268 sqm of centralised, flexible student communal amenity space at ground floor, and flexible retail space facing Sneinton Market.
The work would involve internal alterations and construction of extensions on both sides of the former BT Exchange Building, along with the construction of two additional floors of student accommodation to the building’s newer Oval extension.
Numerous objections have been submitted against the plans with key concerns being the demolition of areas currently housing businesses, and an over-saturation of student flats in the cultural area.
