Nottingham council homes schemes move closer

New council homes in Nottingham are to move closer next week when plans go before the City Council’s Executive Board for approval.

The properties on the former Eastglade School site, in Bestwood, and a surplus garage site near Southchurch Court, in Clifton, will provide much-needed homes for people on the Council’s waiting list.

A total of 106 new homes for affordable rent, along with open space, have been proposed for the former Eastglade School. Developed and managed by Nottingham City Homes (NCH), it will provide 23 one-bed flats, 63 two-bed houses and 20 three-bed houses. The proposals will make better use of the currently unused site, which has been vacant since the closure of the school in 2007. The buildings were demolished soon after.

Due to the high demand for Council homes for singles and couples in the area, it is proposed that surplus garages at Southchurch Court, in Clifton, will provide 36 one-bedroom apartments for affordable rent.

Right To Buy replacement funding will meet up to 30% of the costs for developing the new housing.

Both developments will be subject to planning approval. NCH, which is the council’s development agent and which also manages the council’s housing stock, submitted a planning application for Eastglade at the end of last year. The garage sites application is due to follow shortly.

Nick Murphy, Chief Executive at Nottingham City Homes, said: “NCH has been working with the council for a number of years to build hundreds of new council homes across the city.

“We are continuing this partnership with sites such as Eastglade and Clifton, where we are looking to create well-built, energy efficient, modern homes for local people on the council house waiting list.”

Councillor Linda Woodings, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing and Heritage at Nottingham City Council, said: “With an increasing number of people on Nottingham’s council house waiting list, we have made a commitment to build or buy 1,000 council or social homes for rent over the next four years.

“Working with Nottingham City Homes and other partners, we’re transforming Nottingham’s neighbourhoods by developing a mix of much-needed properties across the whole city, from housing for families, flats for couples and single people, to bungalows and independent-living schemes.

“If approved, both Eastglade and the garage sites in Clifton could provide an opportunity to regenerate the area and create new affordable accommodation which meet the needs of Nottingham people waiting for a home.”
