Go ahead for new bistro in Darley Abbey Mills complex

Guy Taylor Associates has supported a successful planning application for a Grade II* listed building in the Darley Abbey Mills complex, set within the Darley Abbey Mills Conservation Area and Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site.

The go-ahead from Derby City Council means that proprietors David Lorentes and Andy and Nichol Malia-Barlow can take forward their plans to open a new café and bistro in the riverside location in 2019.

The Cottonworks – so called because of its industrial heritage – will be located in a building at the north of the creative enclave. It will serve the numerous local businesses and residents in the vicinity.

Guy Taylor Associates worked closely with the Council’s Conservation Officer to ensure that their proposed plans would preserve the significance and special character of the building, which sits within the Darley Abbey Conservation Area and Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Detailed plans for the interior of the café retain the exposed beams and uncover the original walls, in order to highlight the building’s original historic features.

Paul Stanton, Director, Guy Taylor Associates, Derby, said: “The Derwent Valley boasts magnificent examples of 18th century industrial architecture. Guy Taylor Associates is passionate about preserving these buildings to serve the new occupiers and industries within the Darley Abbey Mills complex.

“This planned bistro will contribute to the regeneration of this rich historic site by restoring a disused building, as well as creating employment opportunities. We are delighted our plans have been given the green light.”

The partnership began five years ago when Darley Abbey Wines began supplying wines for David’s restaurant, Lorentes, on Friar Gate, Derby.

David said: “We are very excited about creating this new café which will offer breakfast, coffee and lunch during the day and become a bistro in the evening. We aim to offer something really distinctive within this fantastic historic setting.

“We are very grateful to the team at Guy Taylor Associates for supporting us through this process; they have been absolutely amazing.”

Nichol Malia-Barlow added: This is a really exciting venture which will enhance the offer in the Darley Abbey Mills complex. We’re looking forward to working with David and the team at Guy Taylor Associates to realise our vision in 2019.”
