A deal has been agreed to provide a large development of affordable housing for people in Nottinghamshire as part of the regeneration of a heritage mining site.
Work has begun to bring 126 affordable homes to the village of Clipstone, on land where the former Clipstone Colliery was located on Mansfield Road. The developer, HarperCrewe, is building the sustainable new homes which will be managed by Midlands-based landlord, Platform Housing Group.
There will be 88 homes for social rent and 38 homes for shared ownership available to local people when the development is complete.
David Boyes-Watson, head of new business at Platform Housing Group, said: “It’s fantastic to see work starting here at Clipstone, to enable more local people to have a place to call home. We’re grateful to the work of our partners at the local authority for bringing the site forward and to the team at HarperCrewe who we know will deliver the high quality homes we expect.”
Councillor Lee Brazier, portfolio holder for housing at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “There is a real need for more housing not just in the district but across the whole of the country. In the UK the supply of housing has not been keeping up with demand and access to housing of any type is becoming increasingly difficult for low income households.
“The delivery of this development is a positive step towards meeting the area’s affordable housing requirements, providing an additional 126 affordable homes for the community and offering residents valuable opportunities to enter the property market.”
Clipstone is an ex-coal mining village in the north of the county. At its peak in the mid 1980s, the colliery was the among the top producing mines in the country until its closure in 2003. The development of the site is part of a wider regeneration of the local area which will see significant investment by Newark & Sherwood District Council in open space, community facilities and sports pitches for the community.
Nathan Deen, land director at HarperCrewe, said: “We are looking forward to working on this project and are committed to delivering future proof housing of a variety of tenures at Clipstone.
“All of our new homes here will adhere to HarperCrewe’s high sustainability standards in alignment with our ambition to deliver accessible sustainable housing with a lasting legacy. The team at HarperCrewe is proud to collaborate with Platform; we look forward to witnessing a new neighbourhood develop and integrate into the local community.”
The first new homes are expected in the spring of 2026.
