Time Out: Ashley Oates, Head of Sustainability at Ward

The weekend has crept up on us once again. That means it’s time for some quickfire questions with another business leader from our region.

For this week’s ‘Time Out’ we caught up with Ashley Oates, Head of Sustainability at Derbyshire-based metal recycling and waste management firm Ward. We asked her how she likes to wind down when she’s not working on environmental initiatives and driving forward Ward’s sustainability strategy.

What is the first thing you do to get the weekend started?

Each week on a Friday a member of the family (there are 5 of us!) gets to choose what they would really like for tea. Sausage and Mash and Fish and Chips seem to crop up a lot. The children get fizzy pop and I get my favourite cocktail – a Margherita!

What is your hobby?

I have lots! My passions in life are science and nature. I love to grow things, mainly things I can eat, but a few flowers too. I really enjoy yoga, cooking, and crafting so I have a blog and Instagram account where I post about those things.

I’m excited by technology too, so in normal times a treat for me is a visit to the Apple Genius bar. I have a DSLR camera and very much enjoy photography too. I also practice reading and writing in Spanish using Duolingo on which I currently have a 108 day streak!

What is your favourite movie?

Pulp Fiction. It never gets old and I see something new every time I watch it.

If you hadnt been successful at what you do, what would you be doing instead as a career?

My love of science and nature also extends to all things medical. I read my Aunt’s medical books and love watching medical programmes on TV, so I feel fairly certain that I would have become a nurse.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

To be able to travel to wherever I wanted to be, just by blinking my eyes. I love to travel and see new places, but the time it takes to get places can be a bit of sticking point.

What is your favourite genre of music?

I have a pretty eclectic music collection. I enjoy everything from Jurassic 5 to Florence and the Machine to Nirvana to Madonna and Prince. My favourite live performance was probably Muse at Glastonbury, although Vampire Weekend were excellent too, and the most fun evening ever was Fatboy Slim performing on Brighton Beach.

If you could travel to any moment in time where would you go?

I would pop forward in time by 20 years to have a little sneak peak at my life so that I would know where I need to focus my efforts today and have a heads up about any crazy curve balls that I need to be prepared for.
