LLEP chosen to be England’s careers hub

Leicester and Leicestershire is one of 20 areas across the country to receive a boost in preparing young people for the world of work.

The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) area is to become one of 20 ‘Careers Hubs’ around England to help transform careers education for young people after the LLEP successfully bid to become one of the first areas to establish a Careers Hub.

The LLEP Careers Hub will be made up of 20 local schools and colleges working together with universities, training providers, employers and careers professionals to improve careers education.

Careers Hubs are a central part of the Government’s Careers Strategy, published last December. The strategy aims to improve careers education and help prepare young people for the world of work.

The Government asked The Careers & Enterprise Company to scale up a model successfully piloted in the North East by establishing Careers Hubs across the country, allocating £5 million nationally over a two-year period to support the Hubs.

The LLEP Hub will have access to support and funding to help them meet the eight Gatsby Benchmarks of excellent careers education. This includes:

  • A ‘Hub Lead’ to help coordinate activity and build networks
  • Access to bursaries for individual schools and colleges to train ‘careers leaders’
  • Central Hub Fund equivalent to around £1k per school or college
  • Access to funding for schools to support employer encounters

Paula Staley, Assistant Head Teacher at Beaumont Leys School said: “The Careers Hub will be a fantastic opportunity for Beaumont Leys School to continue to work with a broad range of schools to put careers at the heart of raising aspiration and life chances for students.”

Kevin Harris, LLEP Chair said: “We are delighted to be one of 20 areas across the UK to secure a Careers Hub for our region.  There has never been a more important time to support young people to understand the career opportunities of their local area.

“The schools and colleges that have committed to being part of the Hub will share their best practice with the wider school and college community to ensure lessons learned are applied across Leicester and Leicestershire for the benefit of all our young people.”

Claudia Harris, Chief Executive of The Careers & Enterprise Company, said: “We’re excited by the potential impact of the Hubs. If employers, schools and colleges can better prepare young people for the world of work, we’re not just benefiting the future economy, but improving prospects for thousands of young people.”
