As reports have hit the headlines highlighting the fact that older homeowners are “trapped” in large houses and unable to downsize because of a “crisis in bungalow building”, one East Midlands-based house-builder is keen to point out that not all developers are refusing to build these “land-hungry” properties.
Fairgrove Homes in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, regularly designs and builds brand new bungalows.
MD Steve Midgley said: “Many of the bigger property developers refuse to build bungalows.
“They feel that they take up too much land space and are not cost-effective. But at Fairgrove, we recognise the many advantages of these fantastic single-storey dwellings and the value customers place on them – particularly the over 55s market.
“At our Dominion development in Doncaster, we gained planning permission to build two brand new detached bungalows, and as we offered the ‘Custom Build’ option – whereby buyers were able to tailor their design to suit their own specific lifestyle – they proved to be very highly-sought after from the launch weekend onwards. We’re currently building two new ‘Baysdale’ bungalows at our Hollywell Fields development in Kimberley, which are also proving to be incredibly popular”.
A recent Fairgrove “bungalow buyer” is Mrs Tansley who bought a Weybourne 3-bed bungalow at the company’s Oakland development in Smalley, Derbyshire, moving in in July 2015.
She said: “We were looking to downsize for a long time and liked the idea of single-storey living, so a bungalow was the property we were after.
“But we were also after a new-build, and it was this that turned out to be the problem. Even when we found new bungalows by some of the bigger house-builders, they were just too small. When Fairgrove’s bungalows became available at Smalley it was fantastic! We could just move straight in, not having to make any repairs or restorations. We’ve been here just over a year now and we love knowing that this is a safe, spacious home for life”.
