Ashby-de-la-Zouch M&S Food Hall voted best designed building of last 10 years

The M&S Food Hall in Ashby-de-la-Zouch has been voted the best designed building of the last 10 years by the people of North West Leicestershire.

The boldly designed hall that stands at the entrance to the town has been recognised at North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Good Design Awards after leading the way in nominations from the public.

NWLDC raised the bar for developers in 2008 after the district was cited as being weak when it came to design quality. Ten years on and it is now recognised as one of the strongest places for high quality design in developments. The celebratory event on Friday 21 September was held to commend the efforts of everyone involved in bringing design up to scratch.

The public vote invited people to nominate any building or development built in North West Leicestershire since 2008. Others that received nominations included the Community Hub at Castle Donington, which is due to open soon, and the Radisson Blu hotel where the event was held.

A number of other development schemes received commendations during the event for meeting NWLDC’s high standards of design requirement.

The Conygar Investment Company, Marchini Curran, Savills, Pioneer Design and Build, C4 Consulting and of course M&S were all involved in the design, architecture and construction of the People’s Award winning M&S Food Hall.

Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “Congratulations to M&S on winning our Good Design award – it’s a fantastic building that helps create a striking and attractive gateway into Ashby.

“A thank you must go to all the developers and builders that have worked with us over the last ten years to ensure a higher standard of design across our district. It was great to see so many of these get the recognition they deserve at our Good Design celebration.

“I’m proud to say we’ve achieved what we set out to achieve ten years ago. North West Leicestershire is now recognised as one of the finest when it comes to good building design – and many other local authorities are now asking us how we’ve raised the quality of new developments.”

Robert Ware, Chief Executive of The Conygar Investment Company, the M&S Food Hall site developer, said: “We are delighted with the design of the M&S building and that it has won this coveted award. High quality design is important to improve the shopping experience for customers and to attract people and businesses to the area.

“It is something we intend to roll out across the whole of the site. We would like to thank the public for voting, North West Leicestershire District Council and everyone who has worked on the site for their support with this development.”
