A Hinckley businessman whose ventures include a “green” building firm and a recycled clothing service has won Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the international Business Excellence Awards.
Jamie Hunt, who owns UK Building Compliance and subsidiary companies Easy Laundry, JimmyJoes and Green Print Homes, was presented with the award at a ceremony at South Wales’ Celtic Manor Resort, which was attended by 800 business professionals from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Joined by ActionCOACH Mark Jennings, who has helped the 35-year-old entrepreneur take his businesses to the next level over the past 18 months, Hunt said he was absolutely delighted.
He said: “I’m very proud to have won this award, it’s a great way to celebrate our journey so far.
“I have worked extremely hard from a young age to create a group of successful and sustainable businesses. However, none of this could have been achieved without great staff and partners”.
After leaving school at 16, Hunt worked in the family recycling business for two years before going backpacking. At 20, he bought a failing vending business, which he doubled in turnover and sold a year later, then built a party hire and firework company from scratch, successfully selling this on too.
Using his capital to invest in property and renovations, he trained as an energy assessor and set up UK Building Compliance. Spurred on by the buy-to-let market and demand for sustainable properties, Green Print Homes – which builds and develops “green” homes from scratch – was born.
Setting up Easy Laundry, which includes both on-site and mobile services, Hunt then called on his recycling experience to launch JimmyJoes, which buys used clothing to export to Africa and Lithuania – a venture which also helps to reduce the impact on landfill sites in the UK.
In the past six years, turnover across the group of Hinckley-based businesses has doubled year on year, with a client portfolio that includes some of the UK’s biggest house builders, major corporate and blue-chip companies, leading retailers and associations including Age UK.
Hunt’s win is also a celebration for Mark Jennings, who supports a host of SMEs and entrepreneurs across the East Midlands and coached a Business Excellence Awards winner in 2014.
He said: “It’s been great to work with Jamie, who is passionate and tenacious, and has the resolve to learn from everything he does to keep moving forward. I am very proud of his win and look forward to continuing to help him develop his team and drive his business growth further”.
