Businesses are racing to sign up to the 2019 Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge, in support of Rainbows Hospice. Sponsored by East Midlands Business Link, Gable Events has organised the eleventh challenge, which will take place on Sunday 4th August 2019 on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment.
With just over a month to go until the River Trent reverberates to the sound of beating drums and splashing paddles, there is still time to get your team together. The warmer weather inevitably turns our thoughts to activities on water and what better way to keep cool than with a day of competitive fun racing a dragon boat alongside your colleagues and friends?
Business Link recently caught up with two teams competing this year: Midlands Housing developer William Davis, and Connia Interiors, a Nottingham-based business with 15 years of experience in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom market.
Sam Starling, William Davis’ Marketing Manager, noted that the firm has actually competed in the race before, many years ago, and are getting involved again this year because the event is great for local charity Rainbows. Sam is looking forward to the challenge of the race and the fun of the event. When asked if the ‘Davis’ Five Star Dragons’ team will win she said: “It’s not about the winning it’s about the taking part, but we do work well as a team and we even have two members of the exec on board!”
Meanwhile this will be Connia Interiors’ fourth time competing in the event. In addition to helping raise money for Rainbows by entering the race, the business is also using the opportunity to help build the second story of a school in the Philippines for a poor community. “This will be our fourth event. The first three raised the funds for the first storey of the school,” Warren Leighton of Connia Interiors explained. “We have a mixed team of English and Filipino rowers. The winners will be the children of that poor village.”
More than 30 teams are expected to battle it out in the spectacular races on Sunday 4thAugust, cheered on by thousands of spectators and there is still time to get your team together and join in the popular day of team building and fun!
Last year’s Dragon Boat Challenge raised over £10,000 for Rainbows which provides vital help, care and support for children across the East Midlands with terminal and life-limiting conditions. By taking part and raising money for Rainbows, the teams will be helping families from Nottinghamshire and across the region to make the most of the time they have left together and create memories they can treasure forever.
The 30’ dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided by Gable Events, and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. No previous experience is needed to take part, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm.
Medals and trophies are awarded for the top three crews, top mixed crew and the ‘best dressed’ crew and there’s a superb incentive to top the fundraising leader board as the crew raising the most money for Rainbows will receive a special prize escape room experience at Escapologic.
Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of the Nottingham Riverside Festival, one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. Media partners to the Dragon Boat Challenge are East Midlands Business Link and Notts TV.
