Views sought on latest plans for Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station site

Following consultations in 2022, residents and interested parties have been invited once again to have their say on the latest plans for the Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station site.

Changes to the Local Development Order (LDO) are being assessed by Rushcliffe Borough Council that could kick-start development on the site with possible data centres.

This is in line with government calls for potential sites and current market demand that could allow for possible planning permission to be aligned earlier.

Three elements of the LDO will be considered: allow data centre uses to be located on the southern part of the site on land south of the A453; allow environmental mitigation works to come forward early with Council agreement; allow Local Labour Agreements to be agreed on a plot-by-plot basis.

Then, a full review of the LDO is planned to take place in summer 2026 that could assist more industry and business projects to begin to take shape on the site and potentially create thousands of permanent highly-skilled jobs.

The power station, owned by energy company Uniper, closed at the end of September 2024 in line with government policy to end coal-fired power generation.

The Council now wants to hear views on its latest proposals by January 6, 2026 on its website.

Part of the site is designated as the previously announced East Midlands Freeport, which could create further jobs and significant investment to the borough.

Cllr Neil Clarke, leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: “Have your say on the future of this hugely important strategic and iconic site that could shape this part of Rushcliffe and the East Midlands and attract significant investment in the region.

“An updated LDO could secure its long-term future for it to remain a site of local, regional and national importance and we want to play our part as the local authority to maximise its potential.

“It’s important to positively shape the future of the site and an updated LDO could deliver a major role in its future.”
