The SOCOTEC Group, a major player in risk management and trusted partner to its client companies, is continuing its UK expansion with the acquisition of the Butler & Young Group, specialists in building control and fire consultancy services.

The Butler & Young Group is the umbrella company for Butler & Young Approved Inspectors, one of the largest approved inspectors in England and Wales by number of projects, Trenton Fire one of the largest independent fire safety consultancies in the UK and Butler & Young Consultants a leading specialist in built environment consultancy.

With a turnover of £10 million, the Butler & Young Group has 15 offices throughout the UK employing 175 people, and has been involved in the technical inspection of more than 80,000 construction projects since it was established in 1997.

The acquisition further strengthens SOCOTEC UK, the SOCOTEC Group’s largest European base outside France which, in 2018, generated a turnover of £100 million through its existing services in testing, inspection and compliance, across the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Ian Sparks, CEO of SOCOTEC UK, says: “We are very pleased to enter the world of building control and fire consultancy services with the acquisition of the Butler & Young Group.  Building control and fire consultancy services will become the fourth leg to our UK business, alongside Infrastructure, Labs and Analytical and Environment & Safety.

“The UK market is consolidating and offering room for innovation thanks to digitalisation and BIM. Against this backdrop, we aim to boost activity. The combination of Butler & Young Group’s longstanding expertise and our strong sales drive in the UK should provide us with the right platform for rapid growth.”

Hervé Montjotin, SOCOTEC Group CEO adds: “This acquisition is completely in phase with our aim to become European leader in TIC by 2020 in the construction and infrastructure sectors. It will reinforce our SOCOTEC UK subsidiary by adding expertise in building control and fire consultancy. We are extremely pleased and proud to be able to carry out this longstanding activity in the UK, which is our second platform behind France. With Butler & Young Group, which truly fits into the SOCOTEC Group, our UK platform now has a local flagship in building control and fire consultancy that will enable it to take a position as a fully-fledged TIC1 player in construction and infrastructure.”
