Strays set to expand following funding

A family-owned coffee shop in Nottinghamshire has expanded its premises following new funding from Barclays.

Strays, located on Boar Street in Newark, has secured the funding which has enabled them to create an additional twenty covers including the creation of a courtyard area. The business was established in 2004 by husband and wife team Jane and Brian Oldfield. Since that time the couple have continued to expand its offering including offering tapas and jazz evenings and a small bookshop. Matt Short (son) and Liz Mack (daughter) were brought into the partnership a few years ago to enhance the family feeling about the business. Today the business employs 25 staff and turns over in excess of £1m. Jane Oldfield said: “To survive in today’s business climate, it’s important to continue to look for new opportunities that keep your business fresh and attract new customers. The additional seating will enable us to offer refreshment to more people and increases the available capacity we have for our tapas and jazz evenings.” Alan Mele, relationship director at Barclays in Nottingham said: “I admire Jane’s determination to grow the business. Strays is a popular choice for many local people and this latest expansion will ensure even more people are able to enjoy the services she offers.”
