A royal visit has brought renewed attention to West Northamptonshire’s community organisations and employers that play a central role in supporting veterans, developing workforce skills, and strengthening local partnerships.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal toured several organisations across the region, recognising their contributions to the Armed Forces Covenant and the broader social fabric of Northamptonshire.
The itinerary began at Edward Green & Company, the Northampton shoemaker known for its craftsmanship and initiatives that help veterans transition into employment. The visit underscored the firm’s ongoing role in preserving British manufacturing while integrating social responsibility into its operations.
The Bridge Substance Misuse Programme, marking its 20th year, was another key stop. The centre supports individuals rebuilding their lives and works closely with West Northamptonshire Council to deliver monthly Armed Forces drop-in sessions.
At The Good Loaf bakery, which celebrates its 10th anniversary, the focus turned to social enterprise and inclusion. The bakery provides training and jobs for women facing barriers to work, including those connected to military families.
The day concluded at the Clare Street Army Reserve Centre, where cadets from the Army, Air, Sea, and Combined Cadet Forces showcased their skills. The event doubled as a networking opportunity for local employers to connect with young people developing leadership and teamwork capabilities.
Anne Burnett, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire, said: “It was a great honour to welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal back to Northamptonshire. Her visit shone a light on the remarkable organisations and individuals who make such a positive difference in our communities – from supporting veterans and their families to creating opportunities for young people through the cadet forces.
“The event at Clare Street Army Reserve Centre was particularly inspiring, and the venue itself provided an excellent setting for the day, perfectly showcasing the professionalism and community spirit of our local Reserves. It is a fantastic facility that deserves to be better known and more widely used across Northampton.”
The visit followed the recent Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet Investiture and the Northamptonshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership Board meeting, both of which reaffirmed the county’s focus on collaboration among civic bodies, employers, and the defence community.
