Rolls-Royce has signed a multi-year framework agreement with AVK to secure production capacity for its mtu Series 4000 emergency power generators. The deal guarantees five years of output at a time when demand for resilient backup power is rising across the UK and European data centre sector.
Vittorio Pierangeli, Senior Vice President Power Generation at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, explains: “With this agreement, both partners are reaffirming their commitment to leveraging their combined strengths to serve the booming European data centre market. We intend to further expand this partnership in the coming years.”
AVK has integrated mtu engines into its critical power systems for over twenty years and has rolled out hundreds of units across major data centre developments. The strengthened agreement builds on this record, supporting operators expanding their estates to manage heavier compute loads and meet tighter resilience standards. It also reinforces ongoing work on HVO-compatible generator technology to lower operational emissions.
AVK and Landmark Power Holdings have also committed to a joint programme focused on low-carbon on-site generation for data centres. The initiative pairs Rolls-Royce generator technology with Landmark’s carbon-capture systems and AVK’s microgrid expertise to deliver power solutions that cut emissions while improving energy security.
Long-term planning in the sector is expected to include wider adoption of advanced gas engines. Rolls-Royce intends to introduce its 20-cylinder mtu 4000 L64 model in 2026, offering rapid start-up performance and a higher power density for emergency and continuous-run use. The engine is designed to operate on biogas, biomethane and future hydrogen blends, providing a transition pathway for operators pursuing decarbonisation over the next decade.
