Rolls-Royce issues first verified environmental declarations for data centre backup units

Rolls-Royce has supplied its first emergency power generators with verified Environmental Product Declarations to a European data centre operator. The milestone strengthens transparency expectations in a sector facing rising scrutiny over energy use, lifecycle impacts, and supply-chain reporting.

“With these environmental product declarations, we set a new industry standard for environmental transparency in the field of energy systems,” said Tobias Ostermaier, President Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division. “This is our response to growing demand from our customers, and we are actively supporting them in reducing their carbon footprint.”

The declarations cover mtu 16V 4000 DS2500 and 10V 1600 units and outline their environmental footprint from raw material extraction through to end-of-life processing. The assessments follow standards set by the EPD International System and draw on operational data from Rolls-Royce facilities and partner suppliers.

The generators are approved for use with renewable fuels, including hydrotreated vegetable oil and e-fuels, enabling operators to reduce reliance on fossil diesel. They also support extended maintenance cycles, which lower operational costs and reduce emissions associated with routine testing. Modern exhaust aftertreatment limits pollutants such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, with combined fuel and system improvements cutting overall emissions by more than 90 per cent.

The company’s decision to register EPDs gives data centre operators clearer lifecycle performance data at a time when regulations, procurement policies, and reporting standards are becoming increasingly stringent.
