New automotive academy targets skilled labour gap

Derby College Group has launched a new Automotive Academy at its Roundhouse Campus, designed to meet the growing demand for skilled vehicle technicians in the East Midlands and beyond.

The redevelopment forms part of a broader strategy to future-proof the region’s automotive workforce by offering training aligned with industry needs. The academy delivers qualifications from Level 1 to Level 3 across light vehicle maintenance, service and repair, and emerging green automotive technologies.

The facility was unveiled at an employer engagement event, where local businesses, apprentices, and education partners previewed its advanced workshop environment. The programme is open to full-time students, adult learners, and apprentices, with the curriculum tailored to support progression into industry roles.

The initiative builds on Derby College Group’s partnerships with firms such as Halfords, Beechwood Mazda, Gtech Motorworks, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK. These companies contribute to work experience programmes and provide practical exposure to current workplace technologies and practices.
