Michael Smith Switchgear has achieved a 60.3% reduction in carbon emissions since 2018, placing it six years ahead of the Make UK Net Zero roadmap. Verified 2024 data shows a further 4.67% cut compared with the previous year, marking continued progress in the company’s decarbonisation strategy.
The firm’s sustainability performance has been recognised nationally, receiving the 2025 King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development — one of only 27 UK companies to earn the honour this year.
“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond compliance, it’s integral to how we operate each day,” said Operations and Finance Director, Emily Smith. “By continually improving our processes and standards, we’re making meaningful progress towards a lasting, positive impact for our people and our environment.”
Carbon reductions have been achieved through greater resource efficiency, product innovation, and sustainable management practices. Emissions are calculated per £1 million turnover and full-time equivalent employee, ensuring improvements reflect both business growth and operational scale.
MSSL also maintains 17.2 acres of ancient woodland in Leicestershire as part of its wider environmental commitments. The site supports local biodiversity and demonstrates responsible woodland management.
The company’s environmental programme is supported by ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and ISO 45001 for workplace health and safety, reinforcing its structured approach to sustainability and compliance.
