More than 120 business volunteers form 22 industries have signed up to take part in Leicestershire’s Largest Careers Speed Networking event – but more are being urged to come forward.
The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership is urging businesses to talk to students about their own careers, give industry insights and top tips on employability as the last 20 places for a careers speed networking event become available.
‘Leicestershire’s Largest Careers Speed Networking event’, part of the county’s business festival, will see more than 300 students from local schools ‘speed network’ with local employers to get a vital insight into the world of work.
So far over 125 business volunteers from across 22 local industries have signed up to the event, which takes place on Friday 3rd November at Leicester Racecourse. Sectors represented include engineering & advanced manufacturing, construction, education, tourism & hospitality, environmental services, pharmaceutical and many more.
This year’s event is being sponsored by leading wealth management and employee benefits specialists Mattioli Woods, founded in Leicester and now with offices across the UK.
Its COO Mark Smith said: “Right from its inception, Mattioli Woods has placed great importance on engaging with young people to help them explore career opportunities.”
“To that end, we have developed our own highly successful graduate and apprentice recruitment programmes which have seen many local youngsters go on to discover great opportunities with us.”
Mr Smith – an enterprise adviser as part of the LLEP with a passion for developing employability skills within Leicester and Leicestershire schools and colleges – added: “We are delighted to be sponsoring this event. It very much mirrors all our own beliefs in businesses engaging with potential future employees within the local community.”
Feedback from last year’s speed networking event stated it was such a great success that 97 per cent of the students who attended “were more aware of their career choices as a result.”
Dr Nik Kotecha, LLEP board member and chief executive officer of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, said: “I’m very excited about this event as it is a fantastic way for young people to explore the array of career opportunities available to them.”
“We want to increase awareness of the LLEP’s key sectors to young people and raise their aspirations, enhancing employability skills. At the same time this event will raise the profile of Leicester and Leicestershire businesses and further develop relationships between schools, colleges and employers.”
“Last year, employers from a whole host of different businesses and public sector organisations such as ASDA, Hastings Direct, National Grid, Aldi, British Gas, NHS and Mattioli Woods attended the event. This year we want to see the same commitments so that students can hear from as many employers as possible and expand on their labour market knowledge.”
