£15.9m extra care scheme reaches major milestone in Hucknall

A new £15.9 million extra care apartment scheme which is transforming the site of a former police station in Hucknall has reached its highest point.

Deeley Construction is building the scheme on behalf of affordable extra care housing provider Preferred Homes – with the development partners joining together to celebrate the major construction milestone.

Construction work started on the affordable extra care housing development, which will be known as Gilbert House, in summer 2024 and is expected to be completed in spring 2026.

The scheme is part-funded by a grant through Homes England’s Affordable Homes Programme and regenerates the site of Hucknall’s derelict former police station into a modern living space.

It will see the creation of 73 homes, comprising a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments.

The apartments are all affordable rent and designed as a retirement solution for residents over 55 years of age who can live independently but need some elements of personal care and support.

When completed, residents will be able to enjoy communal space for social activities, including a landscaped garden and bistro for community and resident use.

The scheme further includes a rooftop photovoltaic system to provide renewable energy, air source heat pumps for each apartment, and four electric vehicle charging points for residents.

Ian Whitehead, construction manager at Preferred Homes, said: “It’s fantastic to see Gilbert House reach its highest point of construction and to know that we’ll soon be opening our doors to local residents in need of affordable, fit-for-purpose housing.

“As well as providing essential homes, we’re also regenerating a derelict site in the historic market town centre. Across all our schemes, it’s important to us that we select sites in well-connected locations and Gilbert House is no exception, right at the heart of the community in Hucknall.”

Martin Gallagher, managing director at Deeley Construction, said: “This development is a great example of how partnership working can transform a disused brownfield site into a thriving location for the community.

“These new homes will meet a vital need in Hucknall by providing high-quality accommodation for people over 55 who value their independence but also want access to additional support.

“The shared facilities will also be open to the wider community, helping to create a vibrant place where residents and the local community can come together.”
