The museum at Castleton Visitor Centre in Derbyshire is set to close at the end of December after two decades of operation. Managed by the Castleton Historical Society, the exhibition showcased local artefacts from the Medieval period. It was housed rent-free within a space provided by the Peak District National Park Authority.
The authority has confirmed that the museum site will now be made available for commercial use to help offset operational costs and increase revenue. The decision follows a review of the centre’s financial model, which identified the museum’s rent-free arrangement (covering about half of the retail area) as no longer sustainable.
The Historical Society has been offered a smaller display section within the visitor centre, along with limited storage space for its collection. The transition reflects a wider financial adjustment by the authority as it seeks to balance heritage preservation with income generation across its facilities.
