Professor Greg Whyte OBE has joined Shakespeare Martineau as an ambassador as the firm gets set to embark on a charity challenge.

A two-time Olympian, “physical activity guru” and world-renowned sports scientist, Whyte is the mastermind behind the endurance achievements delivered by some of the UK’s best-loved stars, having helped raise over £35m for Comic Relief.

The law firm, which is the official legal partner of the country’s Commonwealth Games team, Team England, is taking on the “Walk to the Gold Coast Challenge”, a company-wide series of health and wellbeing activities which will see members of its Nottingham team walk 20,000 miles – the distance to Australia, which is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

The firm couldn’t be in better hands. Whyte’s previous experience has seen him train, motivate and successfully coach the likes of David Walliams when he swam across the English Channel; help John Bishop overcome his Week of Hell; coach James Cracknell to run, cycle and swim to Africa; as well as work with Cheryl Cole, Chris Moyles and Gary Barlow when they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. More recently he assisted Jo Brand to walk 135 miles in seven days.

With over 80 percent of the firm already signed up to the challenge the activity has got off to a flying start. All team members have been issued with a step-monitoring Fitbit activity tracker in order to measure the success of the challenges that are being introduced over the next 18 months.

With almost 20,000 miles to collectively step, the firm will be introducing challenges that promote individual, regional, team and firm-wide goals and participation.

Whyte said: “There is a shared set of values and beliefs between high performing professionals and athletes so working with Shakespeare Martineau is going to be a fascinating prospect.  The firm is full of highly motivated success-driven talent. Tapping into this spirit to promote a healthier workforce and workplace through the Walk to Gold Coast Challenge is not only going to be enormously fun it will boost wellbeing, and get the whole firm moving”.

Jo Thornell, client and markets director at Shakespeare Martineau, added: “The Walk to the Gold Coast Challenge encapsulates the ethos of ambition within our people. It’s a great way of bringing our partnership with the Commonwealth Games England to life. Combining this with Greg’s world leading expertise means we have a formula for success that also embodies what we stand for as a firm, capitalising on our culture of teamwork whilst unearthing a healthy competitive streak that spreads across our business. We’re certain there’ll be some fun along the way!”
