From a whisky distillery in Derbyshire, filling up vehicles from household gas supplies and even flying cars, the University of Derby is working with companies to push the boundaries of low carbon innovation.
To build on this, the university wants to hear from more entrepreneurs to develop new product ideas from concept to prototype and on to market.
Specialists at the university’s Institute of Innovation can offer access to materials, process and production with facilities which include 3D printing, simulation and prototyping as well as the expertise to create assured feasibility studies.
They will outline how they have worked with ground-breaking small and medium-sized companies at a Green Innovation and Design for Business event at the Institute, Lonsdale House.
Among the case studies highlighted will be that of White Peak Distillery, who exhibited at the Marketing Derby Food and Drink Awards 2017. The company is also in the process of setting up the first craft whisky distillery in Derbyshire, within a world heritage site.
It has been working with the Institute to see how water from the River Derwent can be used in heating and cooling processes.
The University of Derby’s Director of Innovation, Professor Paul Stewart, said: “It is great fun working with people even when we don’t know what the outcome will be.
“We give free support to small and medium-sized business through consultancy and also give them a chance of putting their ideas into concrete form by prototyping because usually they are so constrained by time and money.”
Professor Stewart, who is among the speakers at the Thursday 30th November event, added that the low carbon sector was growing and the Institute For Innovation was encouraging companies in that arena.
He said: “Low carbon will be a legal requirement, there are also market requirements and opportunities surrounding it and, by being low carbon, companies reduce costs.”
Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the Institute’s specialist technical team to discuss business ideas and any challenges.
It is a fantastic opportunity to access a free resource to help you take your ideas forward.
